Imagine having to send this letter to all your customers (This is an actual letter I received from an online company I ordered product from):
On July 12, 2018, we were informed by a credit card network that numerous XXXXXX customers reported fraudulent charges on payment cards they used to make purchases from us. Based on an analysis that we conducted after this report, we believe that an unknown, unauthorized third party infiltrated the systems that we use to run our e-commerce site and installed malicious software (‘malware’). This malware enabled attackers to collect personal information about our customers.
The information obtained by the unauthorized third party included customer names, addresses, credit and debit card information, phone numbers, and email addresses
